PLAY THERAPY |
Playing isn’t just fun, it is also very therapeutic. Play is the language children use to express their feelings, explore relationships and find self-fulfillment. Just as adults use words to communicate, children use play. Play builds trust and mastery. It fosters learning and acceptable behaviors. It regulates emotions and reduces anxieties. Playing promotes creative thinking and problem-solving. It also encourages open communication while improving self-esteem. With all of these benefits, it makes sense to use play in therapy for kids. In fact, research suggests play therapy is an effective mental health approach for all ages and problems!

CREATIVE INTERVENTIONS
Sometimes it takes a creative approach or a fun project to spark the interest of a child. Likewise, lessons can more easily be remembered when they are taught in creative ways. Creative arts therapies can help therapists better connect with clients. Drawing, writing, painting, coloring — all of these activities can be useful interventions. The same goes for singing, writing songs/raps, playing instruments and games. If a child loves to be outside in nature, outdoor learning activities or ones using rocks, sticks, leaves, wood or even living creatures are effective. All interventions are guided by the interests and direction of each child. |
SAND TRAY THERAPY
Each therapy room at Seeds of Hope is filled with little miniature figures. Disney characters, people, bridges, rocks, fish, and many other things are displayed for kids to use in their sand worlds. Clients are encouraged to let their imaginations flow as they create worlds in the sand. This process creates a bridge between the conscious and the unconscious. Sand tray therapy is actually a very deep kind of therapy. The conscious mind relaxes its control, allowing penetration to the unconscious material lying beneath the surface. This makes possible a completely new outlook on life. Psychological maturation occurs within the child as a result of sand tray therapy and the child does this all on his own. Progress becomes evident in sand pictures. Conflict turns into resolution as chaos becomes ordered. This technique is based on the thought that all children have within them the ability to heal, to know what they need on their own. This type of symbolic and creative play has been proven to enable healing. |
MUSIC THERAPY |
So what is music therapy? Music therapy is the individualized and evidence-based use of music interventions to address social, emotional, developmental, communication, and cognitive goals with a wide variety of ages and diagnoses. Music therapy utilizes the elements of music, such as rhythm, melody, and tempo to activate different areas of the brain involved in learning and speech. Music therapy focuses on the relationship between the client, therapist, and the music itself to address goals.
